There are 5 reasons for bearing problems, 17 forms of bearing damage and corresponding reasons

The main reasons for bearing damage are: 1) material fatigue; 2) poor lubrication; 3) pollution; 4) installation problems; 5) improper handling.
In general, 1/3 of the bearings are damaged due to material fatigue; 1/3 are poorly lubricated; 1/3 are pollutants entering the bearing or improper installation and handling.
Common bearing damage forms and causes

1) The raceway surface and roller surface are covered with dents
Particulate matter on the cage and the raceway surface wear out and the grease (agent) changes color. Usually this situation is caused by unclean installation process.
Keep clean when installing, use new grease, and check whether the seal is intact.
2) Wear caused by improper lubrication
The surface wear is mirror-like, and the color is blue or brown. In this case, due to insufficient lubrication, it should be the lubrication condition, and re-determine the lubrication cycle and oil seal.
3) Dent caused by improper installation
Both the inner and outer ring working surfaces have dents with a pitch equal to the distance between the rollers. The reason is that it is not knocked on the correct ring during installation, or caused by excessive propulsion on the conical shaft, or overloading at rest.
4) Dent caused by foreign objects
The working surface and roller surface are covered with dents, which may be caused by foreign objects or lubricant foreign objects and the surrounding environment during installation. The bearing installation is cleaned, use clean lubricant and check the oil seal.
5) Scratches on the end face of the roller
The end face of the roller rubs against the guide rib, causing nicks and discoloration. This situation is caused by excessive axial load sliding or insufficient lubrication. For such damage, a lubricant with a higher viscosity can be selected.
6) Abrasion of rollers and raceways
At the beginning of the raceway load zone, there is abrasion and local discoloration with the roller, which is caused by the sudden acceleration of the roller into the load zone.
There are two possible methods; one is to choose a lubricant with higher viscosity; the other is to reduce the bearing clearance.
7) Abrasions on the outer surface
The inner hole of the inner ring and the outer surface of the outer ring have nicks and local discoloration. This situation is caused by the relative movement of the ring and the shaft or bearing box. The only solution is to increase the interference between the ring and the shaft or bearing box to prevent mutual rotation. Axial braking or clamping cannot solve such problems.
8) Surface pit marks
Small and shallow pit marks on the raceway, rolling element surface or large cross-section are in the form of crystal damage. This is due to poor lubrication. For example: less oil or viscosity change caused by temperature rise, so that the oil film cannot separate the contact surface, and the surface has instant contact.
Method: Improve lubrication.
9) Fretting corrosion
The phenomenon occurs when there is relative movement between the bearing ring and the shaft or bearing box. This is due to too loose fit or deformation of the bearing housing.
10) Current corrosion
Rolling or rolling body surface has dark brown or gray-black straight streaks or pits. When the current passes through the bearing, the surface of the bearing parts will be welded.
Method: Prevent current from flowing through the bearing.
11) Peeling off the symmetrical position of the rolling surface
In one of the two rings, one ring has obvious stress marks in the radial symmetry position, and the skin peels off. This is due to the deformation of the bearing box and elliptical compression, and the bearing box is remanufactured.
12) Spalling caused by axial load
The force trace is obvious, and the skin on one side of the ring or a raceway of the double row bearing is peeled off.

a. Axial load caused by incorrect installation;
b. Pre-pressure transition;
c. The non-fixed bearing is stuck or the axial displacement reserve is insufficient.
13) Peeling caused by marks
The surface of the raceway peels off, and there are marks equal to the distance between the rollers. This is caused by improper installation of the bearing overload at rest. Other fine marks may be foreign objects brought into the installation or foreign objects in the lubricant.
14) Cracks caused by brutal installation knocking
This crack is a cracked gap and usually only occurs on one side. This is due to the impact of the brutal tapping that transfers the lining to the end face of the ferrule through the rolling body. Do not knock the bearing ring directly.
15) Cracks caused by excessive extrusion
The crack passes through the entire section. This is caused by the interference fit of the inner ring of the bearing being too large or excessive pushing on the conical shaft.
16) Cracks caused by fretting corrosion
It is transverse to the inner ring and circumferential to the outer ring. It is caused by too loose fit or poor shape of bearing box.
17) Spalling caused by fretting corrosion
The raceway surface of the bearing ring peeled off. Corrosion is observed relative to the outer surface that is peeled off here. It is caused by too loose fit or incorrect shape of bearing box.
